This past weekend's Friday night was Marburg B(u)y Night. You may remember it from last year. The city's downtown is lit with colored spotlights and other creative lighting, powered by eco-energy and the shops are open until nearly midnight to inspire a consumerist kick-off to the season. Street vendors are out selling Glühwein and Kinderpunsch, and the holiday markets are open. Here's a shot of the Elisabeth Kirche lit up:

We decided to buy an Advent calendar this year from Hussel chocolates. They have some seriously yummy stuff there! Although their prices run a little high, we fell in love with one of their many Advent calendars.
They have some that are filled with truffles, marzipan, prailines, etc. We opted for the kiddie one since it was just so cheery and was truly a delight to look at. It has assorted chocolates and we'll have to alternate who gets to open each day (13 euros for ONE calendar!), but I have to say it's pretty fun. The front looks like this:
A variety of woodland creatures heading towards the giant pine tree/Christmas tree/Tannenbaum. Then you open it up, pop the top out, and see what sort of festivities the animals take part in.
We love the detail! I didn't have the time pre-exam to get together a homemade Advent calendar this year, so this is a nice alternative.
In other Christmas and chocolate news: Solid chocolate Santas are now making their appearance in Cafe Vetter, Hussel, and a few other places. Stollen and other holiday treats are snapped up every day and the Germans are officially going nuts for Christmas yet another year!

One day I'll get a real digital camera and the quality will improve greatly.

We used to have an avent calendar that had a bible verse for each day instead of candy.
